Cognitive Behavioural Therapy & Mindfulness
What is CBT?
Improve your ability to cope with psychological problems. CBT has been shown to be one of the most effective forms of psychotherapy for a wide range of depression and anxiety disorders, and is recommended in their treatment by GPs and the Government body NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence).
CBT will help you to understand the historical development and maintenance of the problems that you are experiencing, with a focus on your thoughts, feelings and actions. CBT can then teach you proven techniques to help you make changes to the unhelpful processes that are underpinning your difficulties, supporting your recovery.
Appointments usually last for 50 minutes and can range from 10 - 20 sessions, although the total number of sessions required can be longer or shorter depending on the nature and severity of the problem. At your first appointment Jerrie can discuss with you how many sessions are likely to be suitable. After each session Jerrie may also give you certain take-home tasks designed to help you apply the techniques learnt in therapy to your everyday life.
Mindfulness is an approach used within CBT to help people change their relationship with their thoughts. As we go through life, it is common for our minds to be constantly distracted. We can find that our attention is often pulled in different directions by our thoughts and worries, or that we complete many tasks on autopilot, without really realising what it is that we are doing. Mindfulness is about clarity of observation and attention, and will help train you to slow down you tendencies for thinking and multitasking, so that you are better able to pay attention to the present moment without judgment. Mindfulness has been shown to have many benefits for people who have problems with worry and/or depressive rumination.
Appointments can be arranged during the evenings: Monday - Thursday, 6.00pm - 9.00pm at the Equilibrium Yoga and Well-being Centre Huntingdon.
